How to embody a 1950s soda pop sweetheart: a vintage lover’s guide to the 1950s

Updated: Dec 23, 2022

Hello, my darlings! And welcome back to the SweetheartBoudair! (I may or may not possibly change the design of my blog and official name sometime, but it’s just an idea.)

In that case, I’m so happy to bring you another lovely blog post! This time, we’re going back in time to visit the decade where Elvis swings, cherries on top of whipped cream, vintage Cadillacs, and sock-hops. that’s right, my friends, were going to be doing a guide on the fashion & beauty of the 1950s.

If you’re like me and admire the Golden Age of Hollywood and 50s pop culture, keep on reading. I will show you how to get the 50s look and be a part of the wonderful vintage community. I will also give you some of my insight into how my love for vintage came about. That has been a part of my life ever since. Along with a few tips.

So without further ado, here’s how to become a 1950s soda pop sweetheart!

Fashion

The fashion of the 1950s gave the decade its own character and personal style. Thanks to Christian Dior for popularizing his “new look” debuted in 1947, we traded straight menswear-inspired clothing for small-waist swing dresses.

After World War Two, the dusky life of an average American was changing. As soldiers return, many families married, and the baby boom grew to new heights. Thus, housing became a real investment. Many Americans move to the suburbs, starting an alternative lifestyle for families.

With the economy rising and a return to normalcy, women took a more feminine approach in terms of their appearance and style.

With the rise of 50s pop culture, many took inspiration from their favorite tv shows, newspaper, magazines, celebrities, etc.

To achieve the pinnacle of women’s fashion back in the day, I would opt for a casual swing dress and invest in a pair of heels. To make it make authentic, add some stockings and jewelry. (a pearl necklace is a symbol of femininity in life.) This is, of course, if you’re going for the “sitcom housewife” look.

Despite dresses being a common article of clothing, a new form of style emerged; Rockabilly was popular amongst the youth of teenagers. For example,

Greasers with their black leather jackets and slick-pulled back hair. Rockabilly became Notorious for introducing rock n roll in the 50s.

A red neckline top and a tight pair of black jeans would totally match. don’t forget a classic red lip!💋

There’s a plethora of other 50s fashion styles I would love to tell you more about, but this post would be a full-on novel instead of a small blog post!

For me, I take vintage elements from the past and incorporate them with my modern looks. It’s hard to find real vintage pieces, but I’ll give you a list of my favorite shops of the best vintage-inspired clothing:

• Unique Vintage

• Mod Cloth

•Bonnie Chance Collections

• your local antique store

• Esty

Makeup

The makeup game changes in the 1950s, with pastel eyeshadows like blue eyeshadow; became a trend in the makeup industry. Max Factor helps achieve the average woman in America to transform into a Hollywood Star.

Fluttery eyelashes like Audrey Hepburn are a must!

before contour, Grace Kelly would use two shades of blush to contour her face.

Many women experiment with different eye shadow looks, while still keeping the makeup to a minimum.

Eyebrows were much more defined and prominent; they had a shape to them than previous eras.

Vintage fact: did you know you can still purchase the same lipstick that Audrey Hepburn wore in “Breakfast at Tiffany’s”? Made by Revlon called “pink in the afternoon.”

Music

Almost every vintage lover has to have one song of the classics that is their favorite. Mine is ‘Rock Around the Clock’ or ‘Put your head on my shoulder’. Both are just so divine to listen to.

there are many types of 50s music:

Rock n Roll

Do-wop

Pop

Country

Jazz

Tons of famous musicians were big in this decade: Elvis Presley, Frank Sinatra, and Billie Holiday.

to give your room some vintage flair, buy a record player, it would look so charming!

Entertainment

what exactly did people do back in the day?

Despite stay at home moms taking care of the home and little ones, along with husbands working day and night.

many families enjoy some one-on-one time.

For lunch or dinner, many people would hit up a retro dinner enjoying the Taste of chocolate malts. Others would rather enjoy a time of comfort and relaxation by going to a drive-in movie theater.

Teenagers would go to Sock-hops and jive the night away.

There was the occasional shopping: the beach, supermarkets, local parks, and etc.

another form of entertainment was found. for families, it was not just another carousel ride or a state circus….

Inspiration

I always love anything girly or pink! I didn’t really get much into the whole vintage pandemonium not until I discovered Jbunzie. I love her vintage makeup tutorials and other vintage content that show her antique shopping, vintage song covers, and vintage fashion looks. It alludes to my already growing “girly girl” style into something unconventional. It’s completely Unique and overall super cute!

I started looking into more of the past decades and was fascinated by everything.

as if right now, I’ve mastered the art of vintage pinup hairstyles and rocking a vintage makeup look along with finding the right clothes to wear.

To get into the vintage community, I defiantly recommend starting off with lots of research. It takes one to know!

here are some influential people part of the community:

The.pinup.doll

Dandy Wellington

Rachel Masky

Katie Licata

Samatha Vanwie

Follow them on social media! they’re so many vintage creators out there to connect with!

The vintage community is an incredible place, where anyone can share their love for vintage and embrace who they are regardless of their race, gender, and sexual orientation.

The vintage community strives to change the idolized concept of a decade. It’s important to express our progressive views even in vintage spaces.
